Malaysia, 12 December 2011 – It was not the result that they were expecting, but Malaysian karting team RL Karting promises to come back stronger after a disappointing weekend at the 2011 CIK-FIA Asia Pacific Championships held at Kartodromo de Coloane in Macau. Leading race karters Bryan Homi Mehta of Malaysia and Dhruv Shivaji Mohite of India competed in the KF1 and KF3 categories respectively. Both drivers were struggling to find pace all weekend and while Mehta managed to finish 9th in the final, Mohite unfortunately met with an incident that prematurely took him out of the race.
In the KF1 category of 15 drivers, 17-year-old Malaysian driver Mehta, newly-crowned All Stars Karting 2011 Malaysian KF2 champion, qualified 8th and finished 11th in both Heat 1 and Heat 2 on Saturday. He finished 10th in Heat 3 on Sunday morning, giving him a combined heats result of 11th. Starting in 11th for the pre-final, Mehta came in 8th but was relegated to 11th after receiving a 10-second penalty for a bad overtaking manoeuvre.
Said Mehta after the race, “We were very optimistic on Sunday morning as we had good timings. But I suffered a penalty from the pre-final that pushed me further back the starting grid for the final. During the final, the engine wasn’t running to its limits in the first part of the race and it got better towards the end but it was too late. I am feeling disappointed as all of us could have done better.”
13-year-old Mohite from India, who recently finished overall third in the Junior Max category of the JK Tyre – FMSCI National Rotax Max Karting Championship 2011, was aiming for a top 5 finish for the KF3 category – a likely result if not for the mishap during the final. Mohite encountered a flat tyre and misfiring from the engine during qualifying, putting him last of the 14 drivers. Starting in the last row for all three rounds of the heats, Mohite came in 12th in Heat 1 and 10th in Heat 2 on Saturday,
before finishing 9th in Heat 3 on Sunday morning. A combined heats result of 12th saw him start in that position for the pre-final, where he finished a commendable 7th. That put him in 7th on the grid for the final but a mistake and then an incident on the track cost Dhruv the race.
“I’m still new to the international arena of racing and this weekend has been a good but difficult experience. Other than racing regularly in India, I’ve only done some races in Malaysia and one race in Japan recently. The last time I raced in Macau was three years ago but that was in another series and not as competitive as this CIK-FIA Asia Pacific KF3 Championship that I did this time. The final was a pity – where I had the incident – but I will learn as much as I can and grow from this,” said Dhruv.
RL Karting team manager and mentor Aaron Lim, a professional racing driver from Malaysia, said of the weekend, “We are disappointed with the end result, as the boys were showing strong results in the heats and pre-final, especially for Dhruv. Dhruv is quite inexperienced on the international stage but has proven that he can compete with the best. He did make mistakes, but he has gained a lot in the last one month racing in Japan and here in Macau.
“There was a lot of hope for Bryan to do well and it is a mystery to us at the moment as we had good pace on Sunday morning, but we lost the pace later in the pre-final and final. The team will analyse what went wrong and come back stronger in the next race.”
The CIK-FIA Asia Pacific Championships is part of a prestigious calendar of karting races organised by the International Karting Commission, CIK-FIA, one of the sporting Commissions of world governing motorsport body Fe’de’ration Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
About RL Karting (www.rlkarting.com)
Founded by veteran Malaysian karting champion Richard Lim, RL Karting has groomed numerous local talents to the world racing stage. Drivers such as Jazeman Firhan Jaafar, Nik Iruwan Nik Izani, Fahmi Ilyas and Calvin Wong were once under the wing of “Uncle Richard” and have won several local and international championships before going on to pursue other aspects of motorsports, including setting up their own racing teams. Today, Uncle Richard’s son Aaron Lim is at the helm of the team, taking over the coaching duties as Uncle Richard takes on a consultative role. The young Lim has carved a name for himself in the scene as well, as one of Malaysia’s leading professional racing drivers.
About Aaron Lim
The son of respected and experienced karting champion Richard Lim, it is only natural for Aaron Lim to have fuel in his blood. The 26-year-old Malaysian racing driver started out with karting, winning the Malaysian KBS (Kementrian Belia & Sukan) Junior championship in 1999. He then moved on to formula cars and won the 2002 Formula 100 Open Championship.
Gaining imperative experience in the European racing scene, Lim competed in the 2002 CIK/FIA Oceania Championship (ICA), where he finished overall fifth. He continued to race in Europe in 2003 and 2004 in the Formula A category for the CIK/FIA European Championship, World Championship, Italian Championship and French Championship, where he clocked numerous top 10 finishes. Returning to Asia in 2005, Lim finished overall sixth in the 2005 Formula BMW Asia championship and overall fifth in the same series in 2006. He was then appointed as rookie driver for A1GP in Malaysia in 2007 and 2008, before being promoted to a main driver in 2009.
At present, Lim regularly competes and wins in races such as the Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race and the Sepang 1000KM race. When he is not behind the wheel fighting G-forces in tight corners, Lim is responsible for coaching and mentoring budding young drivers, as well as being engaged in the capacity of professional driving instructor for events such as the Michelin Pilot Experience and the Audi Sportscar and Driving Experience.
About Bryan Homi Mehta (www.bryanmehta.com)
A fun day out for Bryan Homi Mehta at the karting track when he was nine years old led to a developing racing career. He tried his hand at kart racing with a used kart the next year and admirably collected some podium finishes. Displaying impressive dedication to the sport, Mehta worked hard at his craft and won the Malaysian KKS (Kelab Kart Selangor) Cadet karting championship in his first full racing season in 2004. In his second full season, he made it a double when he clinched the 2005 Malaysian KKS Cadet title again, along with the Malaysian KBS (Kementrian Belia & Sukan) Cadet title.
Mehta firmly stamped his name on the local karting world with the 2006 Yamaha SL Cup Malaysia Cadet title and the 2007 Rotax Max Challenge Malaysia Junior title despite it being his first year in the Junior category. Re-affirming his talent and potential, Mehta’s success expanded into the regional stage when he won the 2008 Asian Karting Open Championship Junior title, along with the 2008 Yamaha SL Cup Malaysia Junior title. Since then, Mehta has progressed to higher levels of karting, competing in the All-Japan Karting Championship (KF2) in 2009 where he won Round 2.
2010 was focused on Mehta’s driver development, as he was exposed to world racing standards – he participated in Round 1 of the 2010 WSK Masters Series (KF2) in Siena, the 2010 World Karting Championship (KF2) and the 2010 All-Japan Karting Championship (SKF). Although
Mehta has spent time away from home to gain valuable experience vital for his development, he remains competitive at the national level, winning the 2011 All Stars Karting championship (KF2). He also competed in the WSK Euro Series (KF1) with SuperWinForce and the CIK-FIA Asia Pacific KF1 Championship in Macau.
About Dhruv Shivaji Mohite
Born to a former bike racer, it was no surprise that rising Indian karting star Dhruv Shivaji Mohite would have the racing spirit in him. Born in hometown Kolhapur, Dhruv used to play with small bikes at home since the age of three, but it was only at seven years old when his family noticed racing potential in Dhruv after observing him playing with an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) in the car park. His father and uncle then took him to a go-kart track to give karting a try and it was instant love at first drive. Once it was established that Mohite would go racing, his father built an international kart track for his son to hone his race craft at.
The Mohite junior took part in club races before embarking on his official full racing season in 2007 with the National Rotax Max Karting Championship (Micromax category) in India. In his debut year he finished overall second in the championship, then won the same series in 2008 and finished runner-up again in 2009.
In 2008, Mohite had his first taste racing outside of India when he participated in two rounds of the Asian Karting Open Championship (AKOC) in Macau and Thailand. He did some testing in Malaysia in 2009 before he progressed to the Junior category. 2010 saw Mohite racing in the Yamaha SL Cup in Malaysia, where he earned several podium finishes, as well as in the National Rotax Max Karting Championship (Junior Max category) back home.
For the 2011 season, Mohite continued to garner more exposure, racing in two rounds of the All Stars Karting Series in Malaysia, the Toyota All-Japan SL Cup in Japan and the CIK-FIA Asia Pacific KF3 Championship in Macau. At the national level, he finished a commendable third overall in the Junior Max category of the National Rotax Max Karting Championship.

Birel Pacific have challenged in various races in Europe with Birel Motorsport in the past, and not only with them but also will keep on challenging with this new team.

Super Winforce will get the homologation by CIK after the piles of testing and racing in Europe and in Japan during the season of 2011. We aim to build this new team as a base for the drivers who wish to race abroad.

Bryan was the 1st champion in SL series in Malaysia and was 4th in Junior class of Toyota SL Grand Final in 2008. In 2009, he started to race in Japan and participated in KF2 class of All Japan Championship with several podiums and 1 win, and he stepped up to SKF the year after. WSK Euro series is surely tough but we hope he will show his good fight and contribute to the debut of Super Winforce/Y30D Parilla in Europe.

At the same time, Fuma Horio, who was selected by Toyota Yamaha Scholorship this year, will participate in KF3 class of the same series with Birel Motorsport team.

The 16-year-old who finished in the mid-pack for both the races will next face a strong test at the CIK FIA World Championship KF2 in Zaragoza, Spain on Sept 18-19.
“It has been two exciting weekends. I have had many different kind of experience in the two races. However, the race in Zaragoza would be one to really focus on,” said Bryan.
Bryan is an Asia Pacific Official Birel Works Team driver is the only Malaysian on the grid is taking the European outing to get much needed exposure as he competes in this year’s All Japan Open Super KF Championship.
He is arguably the most promising go-karter from the country and is the only Malaysian driver to be selected by the Birel Asia Pacific factory team. The rest are all Japanese karters.
Sienna was his first European outing in which Bryan had to acclimatised with weather conditions and finding the momentum as the competition in the continent is close.
“My experience in Italy really helped my performance in Japan however I just finished outside the points and had to settle for 11th spot, said Bryan who were among the 30 karters on the grid.
Under the guidance of A1 driver Aaron Lim, Bryan is expected to shine Zaragoza.
“He learnt a lot in Sienna and showed it in Japan. Now the test is for him to show what he has learnt in this past two weeks and I am confident he will be able to do it,” said Aaron.
Bryan will leave for Spain next week.

08 AUGUST 2010, BY SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT

Eddie Liew delivered a sixth Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race (MMER) title for Honda Malaysia Racing Team at Sepang Circuit today, but declares that he is still hungry for more and aims to bring in more glory to the team.

“I regard today’s victory as the most important one. We’ve had near misses in the past two years; and I am glad to repay them with this win,” said Eddie, who also won the overall MMER crown in 2004 and four Class A title in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Partnering former A1GP Team Malaysia driver Aaron Lim and Rueben Wong, Eddie, who is regarded as Malaysia’s most successful touring car driver, took the #27 Honda Civic Type R race machine to finish eighth overall and first in the new Touring Production class.

“This win is a result of a combination of long hours, hard work and many preparations done by the whole HMRT. I believe I speak on behalf of Rueben and Aaron when I say that it is truly a team effort and we couldn’t have done it without everyone’s help.

“There are many factors which contributed to us winning the MMER 2010’s Touring Production Class Champion – the car and its ability to endure the 12-hour challenge, the teamwork in preparing the car and ensuring smooth pit stops throughout the race, the drivers in being careful, alert and adherence to the well-planned strategy and last but not least a stroke of luck!

“One Car 27, One Honda Malaysia Racing Team! We are proud to showcase our ‘Malaysia Boleh!’ spirit in conjunction with our 53rd Merdeka celebrations. I personally hope that I can continue to be part of this fantastic team next year!” Eddie said.

The team completed 281 laps; beating the trio from HKS Garage of Lai Wee Sing, Moh Yze Ming and Kelvin Phon by six laps. Third in the class was a team comprising of three siblings from Brothers in Racing, which managed 265 laps.

Congratulating the team, HMRT Team Principal Toru Takahashi said that the team members had performed remarkably and that their dedication was a perfect example of the Merdeka spirit of Malaysians.

“I believe the team will bring the same spirit of excellence in overcoming challenges, incorporating it into their daily tasks at Honda Malaysia. Our greatest challenge this year was in taking back the Championship title in the Touring Production Class with our motto “Rising to the Challenge”!

“At Honda, it is never only about winning, it is always about rising above the challenges and going beyond our limits. This fortitude is deeply rooted in Honda’s DNA and Challenging Spirit in racing as we continue to compete at the highest level of motorsports,” said Takahashi, who is also Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Chalking his first win in the MMER, Rueben said the victory was brought by the sheer determination and hard work by the team members. He added that he was confident that HMRT will be able to retain the title.

“We have a complete team, a great performance race car and also two highly experienced team-mates, Aaron and Eddie. Kudos to the team members for the commitment, efforts and teamwork in winning this title!

“Throughout the preparations and during the race itself, I can see the HMRT team’s determination to fight for the title. All of them know their roles and communicate well with each other. It is the teamwork that enabled us to rise to the challenge together this year and win back the Touring Production Class Championship in MMER 2010!” he added.

Aaron described the victory as being special.

“Winning the MMER has always been something special for me as a Malaysian as this is our event. I would like to thank my teammates Eddie and Rueben, the team and everyone who made this win possible.

“I am excited that HMRT won the Touring Production Class Championship title this year! This win will not be possible without all the sweat, time and sacrifice invested in preparing for the race. I must say that every year that HMRT participates in MMER, we learn new things and continuously improve ourselves. And this year, it has paid off!

“Preparing for this year’s race was not easy. There were quite a few challenges in the MMER 2010. One of them is, of course, the changed regulation on tires. HMRT members and drivers had to adapt to and test out tires that we have never used before. Additionally, this year’s race started at midnight, which means longer period of driving in the dark,” he said.

Having been bred by the karts and graduating to single seater cars, Aaron’s MMER triumph only shows that the Kuala Lumpur born is an all-round driver.

“I love racing, and when you love racing as much as I do, you would love winning. The only thing that has stopped me from securing a series to take me to next level of racing is money,” he added.

“Sometimes it’s very disappointing, but as a professional, I have to keep focused instead of drowning myself in self pity,” said Aaron, who is also helping the country in building the next generation of motorsports stars.

When asked on starting a career in endurance racing or stock car racing, Aaron said he might consider it if the offer is right; citing the DTM series, Nascar, Le Mans series as the pinnacle if he chooses to do so.

After a glorious karting career which began in Belgium at a very young age, Aaron competed in the Formula BMW Asia (now Formula BMW Pacific) 2005 and 2006 season.

He then kept his options open for the next series to join. However, financial setbacks forced him to confine himself to one-off races, in which he usually manages to impress the paddock.

In 2006, he joined the A1 Team Malaysia team as the rookie driver to Alex Yoong, and later current Lotus F1 test driver Fairuz Fauzy.

Aaron is currently assisting the development of a few upcoming go-karters, such as Bryan Mehta, who is arguably the next most promising name in the business.
